Dhe Green Party politician Lisa Paus will be the new Federal Minister for Family Affairs. She succeeds Anne Spiegel, as the FAZ learned on Thursday. The 53-year-old economist has been in the Bundestag since 2009 and is a member of the finance committee. She has been deputy leader of the parliamentary group since December. Before moving into the Bundestag, Paus was a member of the Berlin House of Representatives for ten years. The is attributed to the left wing of the party.
Paus is considered one of the leading minds behind the green concept for a so-called basic child security. Its introduction will probably be the most important project for the new family minister. It is one of the central projects of the traffic light coalition. The previous financial support payments from the state for children are to be bundled into the basic child security system and replaced by a basic amount for all children from birth. Because of the complexity of the topic – it’s about child benefit, Hartz IV, tax issues and much more – a working group was initially formed to work out the details.
Anne Spiegel resigned from her position as Minister on Monday after criticism had been leveled in connection with her crisis management after the Ahr flood disaster last summer. At that time, Spiegel was Minister of the Environment in Rhineland-Palatinate. Spiegel justified her resignation with the “political pressure” she was under. She wanted to avert damage from the office, she said. Her immediate internal reaction to the accident and her decision to take a longer vacation a few days later were disputed.
