”Succession” has been stealing glances – including mine – since its coronation as the best series at the 2022 Golden Globes. It was released four years ago and has three seasons. When I finished watching it, I could only ask myself: Why had it taken me so long to see it? If it had, the void left by “Game of Thrones” and its gripping battle for the throne would have been filled by this beefy story about the Roy family vying for the patriarch’s media empire.
When it seemed that the millionaire company had a clear successor, history takes a different course and we all end up involved in this disconcerting Shakespearean work. In this contest for power, it matters little if the backstabber is a relative, much less an employee at the bottom of the food chain. It is a cynical world of sharks in suits and ties with no room for conscience or soul.
This modern tragicomedy takes refuge in the dysfunctional family and its addictive dynamics. Each character is perfectly profiled, thanks to its stellar cast. Nothing would be the same without this cradle of villains plotting one after another, laughing at virginal morality and humiliating losers by making them act like pigs and fight over hot dogs. Even with his wicked genius, it’s hard to walk away to his own ‘game of thrones’ and witness the greats fall.
The story doesn’t have a higher level of realism just because it takes place on screen. It does not become a satire on the perverse bourgeoisie like “American Psycho”, but a refined drama framed in this society that does not give us a break because the tricks never stop happening and the fans appreciate it.
