Temperatures dropped more than 10 degrees Celsius to below zero in many parts of South Korea Tuesday morning, with snow falling in many areas as well, the government weather agency said.
South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency quoted the Meteorological Administration as saying that a temperature of minus 3.7 was recorded in Seoul at 0730 local time on Tuesday (2230 GMT Monday), the lowest temperature this fall.
The Meteorological Department also reported that minus 5 degrees Celsius was recorded in the northern part of Gyeonggi Province, which surrounds the capital, and in the mountainous areas of northeastern Gangwon Province.
Morning temperatures fell below zero in the central regions of South Korea, and in North Gyeongsang Province, in the southeast of the country.
Cold warnings were issued in Gangwon Province, parts of Gyeongsang Province and the southeastern cities of Busan and Ulsan since Monday night due to the sudden drop in temperatures.
Warnings are issued when the lowest temperature in the morning falls below 12 degrees Celsius for more than two consecutive days, or when the temperature drops by 10 degrees or more during the day, to less than 3 degrees Celsius.
The Meteorological Department said that afternoon temperatures will not rise much, ranging from 2 to 11 degrees Celsius across the country.
