Suarez led Atletico Madrid to a 2-0 victory over miserable Barcelona, deepening the wounds of his former team and increasing the grief of the Catalan fans over his shocking departure before the start of last season.
After he scored his team’s second goal, the veteran striker pointed with his hand as if he was holding a phone and talking to someone, which the followers linked to Koeman’s call to Suarez in the summer of 2020, during which he informed him that he had left his plans and that he had to leave the “Camp Nou” and search for another team.
After the match, Suarez said the message he wanted to give “wasn’t for Koeman at all”.
“It was for people who know that I have the same number and that I still use the same phone,” he continued, in a mysterious tone, in comments published by the Spanish sports newspaper, “Marca”.
Then he added, “If you want to know, I joked with my kids that I would.”
Suarez also commented on not celebrating a goal against his former team, explaining: “I already knew that if I scored, I would apologize.”
He added: “(I did not celebrate) out of respect and sympathy, for being a Barcelona fan, for my career in Barcelona, and for the difficult period that my (former) teammates are going through, and for the Barcelona fans, I respected that.”
But that did not prevent the 34-year-old from expressing his euphoria with the victory, saying: “I am happy for my team to win, which is what we wanted. The opponent is special, but I have to dedicate my work to Atletico Madrid 100 percent, and today we did everything in our power to get the three points.”
