Strong explosion in Dubai: a fire on a container ship in the main port of Dubai. According to the news released by the Emirate press office there are no victims. “A fire caused by an explosion inside a container on board a ship at the port of Jebel Ali has been brought under control; no casualties have been reported,” the Dubai Media Office wrote on Twitter.

The post was accompanied by a video of firefighters tackling the fire on a large one ship loaded with containers as the flames spread debris on the dock. The port is capable of handling aircraft carriers and was the U.S. Navy’s busiest port of call outside the United States in 2017, according to the U.S. Congressional Research Service. Similar events are a rarity in the ultra-safe Gulf emirate, one of the seven that make up the wealthy UAE.
“I was out on my balcony. My friend saw something yellow coming up (like) the sun. I took the picture and then (there was) a sound,” the intern said. Clemence Lefaix, who is staying near the blast site and posted a photo of a bright orange ball of light against the night sky in front of the apartment buildings. The port of Jebel Ali moved 14.1 million TEUs in 2019, posting a 5.6% decline, but still leaving it in the top 10 globally. There are 8,000 companies based in the Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZA) which has contributed a huge amount 23% of the gross domestic product of Dubai last year. It is the largest commercial area in the Middle East.
