Stroke is brain damage that occurs when the blood supply to the brain is suddenly interrupted by an artery obstruction (ischemic stroke) or, more rarely, by its rupture (hemorrhagic stroke). Without an immediate intervention (in the very first hours of the attack) to bring oxygen back to the affected part, the neurons begin to die: this can lead to severe disability and even death. To prevent stroke, we must say goodbye to bad habits such as smoking, sedentary behavior and improper nutrition. With a healthy lifestyle, in fact, it is possible to reduce the risk by up to 80%, a result impossible to obtain with any other pharmacological or surgical intervention. This is stated by the experts of the American Heart Association, who have drawn up the new guidelines for primary prevention of stroke published by the magazine Stroke.
