During an emergency meeting, the Limburg-North Security Region has just put an end to the large-scale provincial Limburg kick-off of carnival on November 11 in Roermond. The ’11th of the 11th’ is cancelled. The decision also applies to other large-scale events on that day in the region.
Mayor Jos Hessels of Echt-Susteren announced this. Hessels took part in a consultation of mayors in the Regional Policy Team of the security region. He is also chairman of the Association of Carnival Associations in Limburg. According to Hessels, chairman Antoin Scholten of the security region has made the decision on the basis of his authority under the Public Health Act, and has taken the decision to delete the 11th of the 11th.
Scholten points out in his explanation that North and Central Limburg have the highest number of corona infections in the Netherlands. According to the chairman of the security region, large-scale carnival events are a major risk. “However painful this measure is, we really see it as necessary to continue to guarantee care. We are responding to the call from care and the doubt that there is also among the associations themselves. Everyone’s health must come first.”
This is inexplicable
Hessels announced a day earlier that he was very concerned about the start of carnival in Roermond in connection with the health risks. Even if people have to show their QR code, there are still people who carry the virus and can infect others, says Hessels.
downer
Sjeng Kraft Kompenei, the organization behind the 11th of the 11th, speaks of a ‘big downer’. “This is inexplicable,” said spokesman Marcel van Eeghem disappointed. “In a football stadium 40,000 people are allowed to sit together, but the 11th of the 11th is not allowed.” Two concerts by the Limburg artist Rowwen Hèze can also continue. “We understand that the pressure on hospitals in our region is increasing enormously and that healthcare has asked to cancel the carnival. But it is not consistent to let other events take place,” says Van Eeghem.
Earlier today, Sjeng Kraft Kompenei had a meeting with the security services to dot the i’s and cross the t’s. Construction work was due to begin at 6 a.m. Monday. “We were all set.” They had not foreseen that there would still be a line through the event. In fact, after last Tuesday’s press conference, the volunteers were relieved. Van Eeghem: ,,With QR codes and test certificates, events could continue as usual. We comply with the picket posts of The Hague, because we were equipped for that. And our event is also in the open air. But now regionally it has been decided differently.”
The board will meet this evening to ‘settle things properly’. Sjeng Kraft Kompenei fears to go into the ship for tens of thousands of euros. But the focus is now on November 2022, according to the spokesperson. “In broad terms, we can copy the event to next year, although we don’t know what the regulations will do then,” says Van Eeghem. The organization also finds it annoying for the artists who would perform. “They were also unable to do carnival performances last year, this could have far-reaching consequences for the Limburg carnival.”
Emergency consultation
The emergency meeting by the mayors in North and Central Limburg was about whether and how events can still take place. The extra meeting was organized by the VRLN following the press conference of Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Health Minister Hugo de Jonge Tuesday evening. Prominent first item on the agenda was the kick-off of the carnival season. There is also increasing contamination figures in Limburg and maintaining a distance of 1.5 meters during carnival is considered almost impossible.
In particular, the question was whether the provincial kick-off of carnival next Thursday (the eleventh of the eleventh) in Roermond can take place. For the kick-off of the Limburg ‘vastelaovend’, 17,000 revelers were expected on a fenced square in front of the station. So the party is cancelled. The same applies to other large-scale carnival openings in municipalities in North and Central Limburg. Events scheduled for next weekend can continue as usual.
Saint Nicholas
In addition, the arrival of Sinterklaas in the region was on the agenda. It is not yet clear what has been decided about this. The Sinterklaas committee in Roermond already canceled the arrival of the saint on Wednesday. According to the organization, the 1.5 meter distance cannot be guaranteed and there would be too many people together when Sinterklaas sails into the city by boat.
The Sinterklaas arrivals are also on the agenda during the national Security Council on Monday.
South Limburg
The mayors of the South Limburg municipalities will meet tomorrow. These are regular consultations, said a spokesperson for the South Limburg Security Region this afternoon. The new corona measures are also on the agenda there.
As in the rest of the Netherlands, the infection rates are also rising in Limburg. The VieCuri hospital, with locations in Venlo and Venray, and the Sint Jans Gasthuis (SJG) in Weert announced a hospitalization stop for corona patients this week. Yesterday, both hospitals were able to lift the stop after a few days.
