The Annapurna Publisherwho you surely know for Stray, What Remains of Edith Finch or many of his other indie authorial works, decided to take the leap and try to become a AAA game publisher.
The news came on the sidelines of the Resignation of President Nathan Garya position he has held since 2021, who will also leave the company. The heads of the indie gaming division, Deborah Mars and Nathan Vella, are also leaving the company. In short, there has been a real revolution at the top of the company.
More money, more risk
Hector Sanchez recently rejoined Annapurna from Epic Games and was named the company’s president of interactive new media (Sanchez helped launch Annapurna Interactive in 2016). He will oversee indie publishing as the company looks to expand its AAA business. Under the leadership of Megan Ellison, the integration of the games business with those of TV, film and theatre will begin.
Over the past two years, Annapurna has grown tremendously in the indie space, becoming one of the most popular publishers with titles such as What Remains of Edith Finch, Stray, Cocoon, Neon White, Lorelei and the Laser Eyes, and more.
It must be said that it is not a given that increasing game budgets will be a harbinger of success, given that a bad AAA single could cost the company more than the failure of several indies. It’s also not that easy to make the leap, since you’re forced to embrace a very different business model. In any case, we’ll see, hoping that Annapurna doesn’t forget about indies on the way to big-budget titles.
