Tropical Storm Kai turned into a hurricane off Mexico’s Pacific coast on Monday, meteorological authorities said, a day after killing three people in the southwestern state of Guerrero.
The National Hurricane Center in Miami said Kay had turned into a hurricane, and the outer bands of rain were expected to continue to affect southwestern Mexico the next day.
Over the weekend, Storm Cay destroyed homes, fallen trees and flooded rivers in Guerrero and the Pacific coast city of Acapulco.
“Three people have died since the beginning of this hurricane, and the climatic phenomenon is moving away from the coast of Guerrero,” said Roberto Arroyo, Secretary-General of Civil Protection in Guerrero.
The National Hurricane Center said strong winds and rain would move to Mexico’s Baja California peninsula early Wednesday.
