BRUSSELS (Reuters) – Strong winds toppled a crane over the roof of a hospital in the Belgian city of Tournai on Friday, with the passing of Storm Eunice bringing gusts of more than 130 kilometers per hour.
There is no immediate information on deaths, although local media say there are injuries, without offering further details.
Images on social media showed that the crane’s tip collided with the hospital’s ceiling and crashed through the roof of the building’s top floor.
Another piece fell to the ground on a construction site near the base of the crane, which remained standing.
In a separate incident, a 79-year-old British man died after falling off his boat into a marina on a waterway in the city of Ypres amid high winds, media reports reported.
There is information about a teenager in serious condition after being hit by a branch blown off by the wind in the town of Menen, near the French border.
The storm, which is also hitting other northern European countries including the UK, Ireland and the Netherlands, disrupted transport services in Belgium.
The football match between Ghent and Seraing, for the country’s first division, was postponed after the roof of the Ghent stadium was damaged by the wind.
