The video of Croatian players yelling “Za dom spremni”, the motto of the Ustascia movement and equated at home with the “Sieg Heil” greeting, circulates on social media
Storm over Marcelo Brozovic and Croatia. In the last ones A video went viral of the celebrations which resumes some players of the national team, including the Inter midfielder, while shouting “Za dom spremni” (Ready for the homeland) with a hand gesture, a greeting used during the Second World War by the fascist movement of the Ustascia Croatians and equated to the Nazi salute “Sieg Heil”. The offending words are the beginning of a song by Thompson, a Croatian band whose frontman at home is considered a neo-Nazi. Among the players who appear in the video we can also recognize the former Liverpool defender, now at Zenit St. Petersburg, Dejan Lovren, alongside Brozovic.

A way of celebrating that goes beyond any sporting merit and which is nothing new for Croatian players. After the victory on penalties against Brazil in the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Qatar, Brozovic and his companions standing on the chairs had in fact sang the verses of another song by the Thompsons, with reference to “Herceg-Bosna”, a Croatian community created between 1991 and 1994 during the Balkan war and recognized as a criminal project by the International Criminal Court in The Hague. The Thompson singer participates in the commemoration of “Victory Day” every year on August 5, which celebrates the end of Serbian autonomy in Krajina.
