Yesterday F1 announced the decision of cancel the Russian Grand Prix forever from the Circus calendar. Sochi was to host F1 for the last time in 2022, the Grand Prix then from 2023 would be moved to the permanent circuit of Igora Drive near St. Petersburg. The invasion of Ukraine by Russia, however, had among the consequences the stop of F1 in Russia indefinitely.
Alexander Vlasovthe deputy governor of the Krasnodar region where the city of Sochi is located, commented on this decision as reported by the Russian news agency Tass: “It is part of the unreasonable sanctions imposed on Russia to please Western politicians. Sport has always been out of politics because sporting events unite people, countries and continents. Instead, now as sanctions we record the exclusion of our sports federations, the removal of Russian athletes from participating in international competitions and the termination of our Formula 1 contract. I am sure that many other interesting races will be held at the Sochi Autodrome with the support of the government and lovers of Russian car and motorcycle racing ”.
