The Minister of Business and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, participated in the work of the Competitiveness Council in Brussels in recent days, where it held a series of bilateral meetings with representatives of various European countries to discuss the Italian industrial policy proposal for the automotive sector. Not a waste of time one might say, since these meetings have revealed a growing convergence among European nations on the need for strategic interventions to support the sector’s industry.

In particular, were present among the participants in the meetings Jordi Hereu, Spanish Minister for Industry and Tourism; Martin Kocher, Austrian Minister of Labor and Economy; Dirk Beljaarts, Dutch Minister for Economy; Ștefan-Radu Oprea, Romanian Minister of Industry; Silvio Schembri, Maltese Minister of Industry; and Ignacy Nemczycki, Polish Deputy Minister for Economic Development and Technology.
Growing cohesion
In all these meetings, a clear need to address the challenges that the automotive sector is experiencing, also taking into account the indications contained in Mario Draghi’s report. A point of particular interest was the proposal of anticipate the exercise of the review clause of the CO2 regulation in the first months of 2025: this step, according to Urso, would be crucial to review and strengthen the path towards achieving the targets established by the regulation, and will represent one of the pillars of the ‘non paper’ that Italy intends to share with other countries in the coming weeks.
Urso meets European ministers
The Italian position has found a broad support also during the general discussion of the Council. Representatives of states such as Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Latvia underlined the importance of equipping ourselves with adequate tools to support European industry: this consensus was also manifested during the conversation between Urso himself and the German vice-chancellor Robert Habeck, highlighting a front united in search for effective solutions.
