Stomach pain in children is frequent but not trivial, even if it does not have an organic cause. 'Functional abdominal pain', as it is defined by paediatricians, affects 3 out of 10 school-age children, and is the leading cause of school absences worldwide. This condition frequently leads to unnecessary diagnostic tests, repeated doctor visits, missed school and work days, depression and anxiety. To raise awareness of this disorder, the European Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (Espghan), in collaboration with the General Pediatric Societies and the National Societies of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (Pghan) are promoting an information campaign throughout Europe. In Italy the initiative, presented this morning in Rome, is carried out in collaboration with the Italian Society of Paediatrics (Sip) and with the Italian Society of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Pediatric Nutrition (Sigenp).
'Functional abdominal pain' – explained the experts Sip and Sigenp – is a benign condition which in 80% of cases resolves within two years of medical consultation, but should not be overlooked because it negatively affects the well-being and quality of life of the patient. child, with unfavorable consequences also for his family. This problem affects children and young people from 4 to 18 years old, and is characterized by pain localized mainly around the navel, which occurs for at least four days a month and for at least two consecutive months. Abdominal pain may be associated with headache, dizziness, tiredness, pain in the limbs and nausea. This is the most common disorder described to pediatricians.
The campaign launched today includes flyers, posters, brochures and a comic, in various European languages, which will be distributed to paediatricians, but also made available to parents on social channels and on the website of the Italian Society of Paediatrics, to promote understanding of the problem . “The purpose of this campaign – explains Sanja Kolacek, Espghan spokesperson – is not only educational, but rather to raise awareness among the general public. 'Functional abdominal pain' is a benign but annoying condition which hinders the daily life of the affected child and his entire family. If addressed correctly, over 80% of children will no longer feel pain and will be fine.”
