The Public Ministry had already tried to suspend the event, but the Court of Justice overturned the injunction that canceled the show
The president of the STJ (Superior Court of Justice), Minister Humberto Martins, suspended this Saturday (23.Apr. do Mearim, on Sunday (24.Apr).
In the decision, the minister states that there is a “incompatibility” in carrying out the event through public resources, since the municipality is “poor” and belongs to one of the Brazilian States with the lowest income per capita and has an HDI (Human Development Index) “very low”. According to Martins, basic and essential public services are not offered in a “efficient” in the city, and that the R$ 500 thousand show produces “incalculable losses” to public goods. The minister classified the event as a “serious injury” order, health, safety and public economy.
Wesley Safadão’s show had already been questioned by the Public Ministry of Maranhão, which obtained an injunction to suspend the event.
However, the municipality appealed to TJ-MA to suspend the effects of the decision and release the show again. The argument presented was that the suspension represented an undue interference in the activities of the Executive Power of Vitória do Mearim.
The MP alleged to the STJ that offering the event could harm the provision of basic services in the municipality, due to its budgetary difficulties.
