Regina Helena was interrupted by Gurgel Faria who, with the request for a view, said that the judge should not read the vote
Minister Gurgel Faria, from STJ (Superior Court of Justice), left the session of the 1st Chamber of the Court on Tuesday (17.Sep.2024) after becoming irritated with her colleague, Minister Regina Helena Costa, who wanted to read the vote on an appeal under her reporting.
Faria criticized Costa because the president of the Court, Minister Paulo Sérgio Domingues, had asked for more time for analysis. According to Faria, if the minister had read her vote, her colleagues “they would forget him” in the debate. Costa said he wanted to read it to the public.
The ministers were about to begin judging an appeal by Minister Regina Helena, when President Paulo Sérgio asked to review the case. The rapporteur asked to speak to read her vote and was granted permission. As she began to read, she was interrupted by her colleague, who wanted her to read only the summary. Despite Costa’s claim that it would be brief, Faria left the session in anger.
Watch:
Regina Helena is the only woman in the First Chamber of the STJ. After Minister Gurgel Faria left the session, President Paulo Sérgio Domingues gave the floor to the judge again. The other colleagues remained silent during the discussion. The reading of the vote took 2 minutes and 26 seconds.
