Steve Bannon, an ally of former US President Donald Trump, surrendered at FBI headquarters in Washington this Monday (15) after being subpoenaed on two counts of contempt of Congress for failing to attend a legislative committee summons that investigates the January invasion of the Capitol. Bannon, 67, was charged with refusing to appear before the committee and for not wanting to hand over documents to authorities. An indictment of contempt of Congress can lead to between 30 days and a year in prison, as well as a fine of between $100 and $1,000.

The indictment came last Friday, after the House of Representatives detained Bannon in contempt of court on Oct. 21 for refusing to appear before the committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol by Trump supporters. That statement was forwarded to the Department of Justice, which had to decide whether or not to pursue the indictment. Meanwhile, US Attorney General Merrick Garland came under all kinds of political pressure to indict Bannon after the Congressional decision. District of Columbia Attorney Matthew M. Graves recalled in the subpoena that he believes Trump’s ally has relevant information about what happened.
