Stellantis, in 2030 the Gigafactory of Termoli ready: 7 billion investment
It will start in 2026 the gigafactory from Termoli but it will arrive at full capacity only in 2030 with 2,000 employees. It is a unitary note of Fim Fiom Uilm, Fismic, Uglm and Aqcfr to present the roadmap outlined today by Stellantis during a meeting in which the automotive group confirmed the plan for the gradual transformation of the Termoli plant from an engine and gearbox factory into gigafactory from batteries for electric cars.
A transformation that will happen through the joint venture Acc. formed by Stellantis itself with Mercedes and with Total, which will have an industrial capacity from 40 gigawat thanks to which “Termoli will become the third European pole of battery production, with France and Germany, in addition to two other factories in the US and Canada”. The overall investment European Union will amount to 7 billion euros. And the road map outlined by the group provides for the decline and then the cessation of current production starting in 2024with a momentary peak of redundancy in 2025 equal to 1000 employees: from the 2026, however, there will be the departure of the gigafactory, which will arrive at full capacity in 2030 with 2,000 employees.
“On the positive side, the floor of the company potentially leads to full reoccupation. But there are some critical issues, which we will have to face together“, the trade unions comment with a single voice. There are various phases through which the process will be articulated transformationas foreseen: in January 2023 the acquisition of the areas by Acc; in October work will begin in the areas free from current production with module 1 and the construction of the power solar unit, which will have to produce renewable energy with solar panels; in the first quarter 2024, on the other hand, the production of foreign exchange will ceasewhile the descent of the engines will be gradual, with the fire expected to end in 2026 and the premium engines that will continue for a few more years; in January 2025 they will start the first re-absorption of personnel, with a training phase that also includes availability a to work for a maximum of six months in Douvrin in France.
What does the Stellantis plan foresee
The Stellantis plan moreover it also foresees the creation of a research and development center with the collaboration of the University of Molise. The reception of the trade unions was therefore positive, but they found some critical points: “first of all it is from ensure formally that Acc undertakes to hire all workers currently employed a Termolithen in any case there will be a period of work discharge which will require social safety nets accompaniment and that we will have to try to make it as less burdensome as possible for the workers “, continues the unitary note of Fim Fiom Uilm Fismic, Uglm and Aqcfr.
Furthermore, they urge, “it will be guaranteed an appropriate travel treatment for any period of work and training to be carried out in France. Finally, we ask for an agreement that offers the maximum possible protection in terms of regulatory continuity e salary for all the workers involved. To solve these problems, the next meetings will have to involve the successor joint venture Acc and then of course the local and national institutions. But we are confident that we will be able to find the right answers for the workers, since the result is of great importance: the reconversion of the most large engine factory in Italy and the employment of over 2,000 workers“.
“There direction from Stellantis has us today confirmed the floor from progressive transformation of the Termoli plant from engine and gearbox factory in a gigafactory of electric car batteries. This will be done through the ACC joint venture formed by Stellantis itself with Mercedes and Total, which will have an industrial capacity from 40 gigawatts now“. This is what the trade unions Fim, Fiom, Uilm, Fismic, Uglm and Aqcfr report in a note.
