Stellantis has chosen Ontario, Canada, as the ideal location for the construction of its new plant dedicated to the production of batteries together with LG Energy Solution. In this sense, an official announcement should arrive next week: it would be encouraging news for the Canadian workers of Stellantis, given that only last year the company born from the merger between FCA and PSA had made it known that it would stop the production of the Dodge Charger and Challenger models at the Brampton plant, in Ontarionear Toronto, at the end of next year.
According to the latest rumors, the successors of the two models will be built in the United States, which is why the future of the Canadian plant had been questioned. But now a new glimmer of hope is emerging for the 3,000 employees Stellantis in Ontario: if confirmed, the new battery factory built together with LG Energy Solution would guarantee them a new use. We recall that in October of last year the two companies had issued a joint statement in which they specified that they would work together to open a battery plant in North America, which would start production in first quarter of 2024: According to initial details, battery packs will be built in the factory, which will have an annual production capacity of 40 GWh, and will be delivered to all Stellantis facilities across North America for their subsequent installation on plug-in hybrid and electric models .
In the ambitions of Stellantis there is also that of introducing 25 new fully electric models in North America by 2030. There are several car manufacturers aiming at that region as the basis for the construction of a new battery factory: in this sense, the Mercedes-Benzwhich has announced the construction of a new electrical hub in Alabama, in the United States: in addition to the production of batteries, the facility will also be responsible for the assembly of the EQS and EQE electrical systems.
