Stellantis tried to clarify the future of the group's production plants in Italy. In particular, Carlos Tavares addressed the hot topics regarding the future of Mirafiori, especially that of Pomigliano, with the Campania plant coming under the magnifying glass after the announcement and the end of production of the Fiat Panda (Pandina to be precise by virtue of the new name) which will end in 2026. After the Portuguese manager's meeting with the press, it was the CEO of the company born from the merger between FC a and PSA who addressed the issue concerning the historic production site in southern Italy, highlighting that here a new model could arrive that will take the place of the Turin city car.
From Panda to Delta
Tavares did not specify which model it will be and above all you have not even identified the platform on which it will be born, a particularly hot topic given that Pomigliano and Mirafiori are the only two Stellantis plants that do not yet have an assigned group architecture. The most accredited hypothesis is that the STLA Medium will be integrated at the Pomigliano plant and that therefore a model could be created here that some rumors identify as the new Lancia Delta. It would therefore be a model that according to the plans of the Turin Premium brand should arrive before 2027 in line with the disposal of the current generation of pandas from the lines of the Pomigliano factory.
Tavares remains vague
However, the Portuguese manager's own intervention on the topic did not fully reassure those present at the meeting with the manager who remained vague on the timing and above all on the real possibilities for the plant. “The assignment of the new car to this or that plant is not made before this phase, which normally takes place two-three years before the start of production” – the CEO of the group explained to Quattroruote. However, Tavares wanted to underline that the Campania site and Mirafiori will be strategic for achieving Stellantis' objectives: To reach the goal of one million cars produced annually in Italy by 2030 we need all the Italian plants, including Mirafiori and Pomigliano D'Arco ”.
