The birth of Stellantis did not represent the sale of Fiats. The group led by Carlos Tavares would not have engulfed the Turin car manufacturer, with the alleged imbalance of the company born from the merger between FCA and PSA in favor of the French which would not reflect the reality of the facts. This was underlined once again by John Elkann, president of Stellantis who analyzed the family’s vision of the car world and the operations carried out in recent years precisely on the twentieth anniversary of the death of Gianni Agnelli. The lawyer’s nephew in fact, he wanted to clarify how Fiat was relaunched together with the other Italian brands within FCA, from Alfa Romeo to Lancia, via Maserati.
“If we compare the company in 2003 and today’s we see that revenues go from 22 billion to 130 in the first nine months of ’22 alone; there were 22 car models produced then, which employed 49,000 people, for 4 brands: today 280,000 people produce over 100 models for 14 brands – highlighted the president of Stellantis in the interview he releases to La Stampa – We have enhanced the Fiat brand, so much so that next year the electric 500 will also be exported to the USA. We have relaunched the Maserati and Alfa Romeo brands and we are relaunching Lancia. Furthermore, today we produce in Italy and sell models of highly successful non-Italian brands, such as Jeep, all over the world.” Elkann himself then wanted to dwell on how the merger of Fiat Chrysler and PSA did not represent a sale of the Fiat brand but a synergy with a leading group, in line with the vision that the lawyer himself had of the automobile and its developments.
“We went in the direction that my grandfather had already taken in his thirty years of presidency, and we realized that vision in the two worlds in which he believed: America and France. Nothing was sold at all. We bought Chrysler to give life to FCA. And we merged with PSA to create Stellantis, of which we are the largest shareholder, with very clear governance: I am the executive president and at our side is the Peugeot family with whom we have a consultation agreement. Together we support the long-term development plan Dare Forward, presented by CEO Carlos Tavares and his team.”
