(Also) Steiner against the FIA
While the International Federation finds itself having to resist the crossfire of many current and past riders, sparked by Mohammed Ben Sulayem’s anti-swear crusade, Gunther Steiner returns to talk about one of the most controversial episodes in the history (recent, and not only) of Formula 1. The former Haas team principal, often critical of the stewards, has in fact condemned in no uncertain terms the decisions taken by Michael Masi in the infamous last laps of Abu Dhabi GP 2021.
The new book Unfiltered
In the first extracts of his new book Unfilteredthe South Tyrolean manager – who in the meantime won a first legal battle against Gene Haas for the rights to his first autobiographical work Surviving to Drive – in fact he lashes out against the FIA, accusing it of having stopped “taking responsibility for one’s mistakes and having lost humility”. “This is not a good situation”, Steiner then adds, identifying the death of Charlie Whiting – the historic race director in charge from 1997 until his sudden death on the eve of the 2019 Australian GP – the moment in which everything changed in the management of the races by the Federation commissioners.
Charlie Whiting better than Michael Masi
According to Steiner, Whiting’s disappearance would have in fact hastened the process for his succession, with the promotion of the Australian Michael Masi who is responsible for many of the errors committed by the FIA during the very tense 2021 fight between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen: “Regardless of who you’re rooting for (and yes, I agree, it was an incredible show), from a regulations perspective that season It was bullshit of biblical proportions. And, regardless of what decision Whiting would have made in Masi’s place, I’m sure there would have been much less controversy and embarrassment. Oh, fuck it! We all know what Charlie would have done. If he had been at the helm, Lewis would be an eight-time world champion today”.
