Lawrence Yangdesigner of Valve who worked on the development of Steam Deck, urges device owners not to modify their storage drive with M.2 drive. because it could significantly reduce the service life.
Yang replied via his personal Twitter account to various media outlets that were spreading the process to expand the device’s storage space.
“Please don’t do this. The charger IC becomes very hot and nearby thermal pads should not be moved. Additionally, most 2242 M.2 drives consume more power and carry more heat than the Deck is designed. This mod may appear to work but will significantly reduce the life of your Steam Deck“Yang commented in response to PC Gamer’s post. By default, the Steam Deck only supports the smallest line of 2230 series M.2 drives, which are slower than other larger M.2 drives.
