A few hours after its announcement, it Steam Deck is seeing problems with shipments due to high demand, in addition toarrival of the scalpers who are re-proposing the device for sale at exorbitant prices.
The new console signed Valve in a short time since its announcement it has already reached a high number of pre-orders, proving that it has attracted the attention of players. The amount of reservations, however, is such as to have forced the company to ship the product later than expected: the basic versions will not be sent before the second quarter of next year, i.e. from April onwards.
For the version from 512GB it seems that we will have to wait even longer, with the availability not before the third quarter of 2022 (starting from the month of July, so in about a year). Unsurprisingly, many players have found themselves dry-mouthed without the possibility of being able to reserve a copy of the Steam Deck due to the large amount of demand or because the site crashed due to the number of connected users.
This is also because within the sea of pre-orders the scalpers have once again appeared, a trend that has been in vogue for some time now and we have even seen during the launch of Xbox Series X / S and PlayStation 5, in which many they won a large number of copies and then resold them online at a higher price. It was only a matter of time (just) before they even got their hands on the Steam Deck.
Starting from day one of the pre-orders, the eBay pages were filled with offers to sell the console at exorbitant prices. For example, a 256GB model was sold for $ 850, mind a 512GB one was bought for $ 1,599, more than double the list price foreseen by the official pre-order.
To prevent this, Valve took some countermeasures to fight scalpers and prevent them from creating multiple accounts to resell more Steam Decks. This has helped to limit this type of activity, but the overcharge remains a rather obvious problem.
