The designer of Valve Lawrence Yang was contacted by IGN to answer questions about the new mini-PC, in a video from the address book Next-Gen Console Watch uploaded directly to YouTube.
The comfort of a handheld is important, and the designer was in fact asked for an account of his experience with the controls of the mini-PC: having been historically and stoically a PC gamer from mouse and keyboard, the impact with the analog sticks and buttons side and rear was odd, but he got used to them relatively quickly, even completing games he previously couldn’t complete, such as Hades.
The availability of units will increase according to the designer, after a postponement due to the difficulty of obtaining “supplies”: if in the next month we will be in the order of tens of thousands of pieces, in the next we will reach hundreds of thousands and the number will grow again . All those who are “on the preorder” list will be updated in time.
Speaking of pre-orders, the number of pre-orders made by users was surprising, but the designer did not expose himself with a precise figure, limiting himself to saying that the feedback was very positive.
The team is in constant contact with many developers to add support to Steam Deckboth as regards the compatibility and resolution of any bugs, and the integration ofanticheat.
Given its nature as a “full-fledged PC”, cloud gaming is supported through applications. The example chosen is to download Google Chrome from the application menu and start a streaming session from there – although a mouse and keyboard will be required in this case.
Time to time, and they will come software updates to make other peripherals compatible, just like the Steam Controller. On the hardware side, Yang thinks that Steam Deck opens the door to numerous other ideas including third parties, and in this case Valve would be completely open to collaborations and to provide its own. SteamOS.
At the moment, the only Steam Deck models are the black ones, although Valve has considered (and already produced, in prototype form) versions with different colors. In the future there will also be room for cosmetic variations.
The last question concerns the dock charging. Yang simply confirmed that the shipping of the docks will begin towards the end of spring, delayed because “would not have been possible“ship them together with the mini-PC.
In the end, some doubts have been dispelled, but we still await confirmation and updates.
