To everyone’s surprise, Steam announces its version of Nintendo Switch, namely Steam Deck, a portable console with the capabilities of a PC. The price, which starts at $ 300, is also incredible, with additional models having larger memory.
To reveal it, with a series of exclusive videos, is the head IGN, who also asked the developers a few questions. The release date is currently slated for Christmas 2021, with more information available shortly from the company.
The screen is slightly larger than that of the Nintendo Switch, with a resolution of 1280 × 800 on a 7-inch screen, able to better support the latest titles, despite the small size. So don’t be fooled by the small size, it is a real PC capable of running games like Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order at maximum settings.
The console mounts a special version of Steam OS 3.0, thus allowing you to find your library at your fingertips at any time. Furthermore, just like the Nintendo console, it can connect to a computer, so that you can also play on a home screen or on a computer.

The three models, which we mentioned earlier, the only difference will be the internal capacity, while the performances remain the same, so as not to create a more powerful version than the others. The only real difference, as pointed out by Gabe Newell, president of Valve, is only noticeable in the capacity, a point for which he fought a lot in order to be able to present various types of products to the public, with even lower prices.
The three models are as follows:
- 64GB eMMC
- 256GB NVMe SSD (fastest)
- 512GB NVMe SSD (even faster)
The different memories will allow for faster loading of games, without a difference in hardware. The description, reported on the official website, is as follows:
We partnered with AMD to create the custom APU that powers the Steam Deck, optimized for mobile gaming. It is a very powerful Zen2 + RDNA2 processor, capable of providing plenty of power to run the latest AAA games with extreme efficiency.
Within the various videos presented by the American newspaper, several titles are shown at work, including Portal 2, Control or also Hades, just to underline the capabilities of this small but decidedly important new console. This announcement comes shortly after Nintendo’s announcement of its new OLED model of the hybrid console.
