Start and stop is a recent technology that has begun to be included in modern vehicles about ten years ago. It is a system that stops the car in traffic, for example at traffic lights with the aim of lowering the le emissions and consumption of fuel. Let’s see together in this one guide what is and how it works the automatic mechanism that is talked about and amazes many drivers.
Start and stop auto, what is it?
Some manufacturers prefer to use other names, such as Stop-Start, i-stopetc., but the differences between one technology and another are inherently less relevant.
Start and stop is a system that stops the engine of the car during a prolonged stopand then restart it as soon as the on-board sensors detect that the pilot wants to resume the road.
Start and stop auto, how it works
But how does it work and how does it start and stop turning off the car? When certain conditions are met, the electronic control unit manages the Start & Stop, stopping the engine. On a car with automatic gearboxto stop the pistons, it is not necessary to operate the gearbox.
On a car with manual transmission instead, the car must usually be stationary and with the transmission in neutral. In search of greater efficiency, some systems already work during the deceleration phasewhen speeds drop to a few kilometers per hour.
As soon as the driver presses the pedal again clutch or, in the case of an automatic gearbox, he takes his foot off the brake, the electronics order the starter motor to restart the mechanical parts immediately.
Recent developments have made some Start and Stop more cautious and made very fast starts, sometimes almost imperceptible. In any case, most cars with this system have a button that you can deactivate if his intervention is bothersome.
Start and stop auto, what is it for?
Start and stop systems are designed for reduce fuel consumptionreduce the CO2 emissions and contribute to reduce operating costs. During the certification cycle, consumption is reduced by almost 10%while in reality it all depends on the type of path taken. The greatest advantage is clearly obtained on high urban road sections trafficbut it can also exceed this percentage.
Even the most modern start and stop stops the engine for a few seconds, as restarting has the least negative impact on fuel consumption.
Instead, it should be noted that the use of starting and stopping involves components of suitable size, such as battery, alternator and starter motor, which perform a much heavier job than is normally expected. In fact when the charge of the car battery is low the start and stop does not work. Such batteries are battery designed for an average cycle of at least 300,000 ignitionscompared to 30,000 for traditional batteries.
Start and stop does not work
The start and stop does not work when the state of charge of the car battery is optimal, so much so that it cannot guarantee its operation. It also doesn’t work when the machine is at cold engine or there is an important climatic difference between the interior of the passenger compartment and the exterior with the air conditioning working.
The driver can manually too deactivate momentarily the start and stop by means of a button placed on the dashboard of the car and on the central console.
Many choose to disable the start and stop as well permanent (by intervening on the control unit) to preserve some particularly stressed car components such as the starter motor and the battery itself, due to the numerous ignitions.
