American actor William Shatner, best known for playing Captain James T. Kirk in the classic sci-fi series Star Trek, 90 years old, became the oldest person to travel into space on Wednesday -Friday (13).
He took off with three other crew members aboard the New Shepard rocket, belonging to Blue Origin, the space tourism company owned by the billionaire Jeff Bezos, for a “turn-around” of about ten minutes in duration. The launch took place around 11:50 this morning (GMT) at a base in the state of Texas, United States. Crew members experienced four minutes of zero gravity.
The capsule, which is reusable, returned with the aid of special parachutes and landed safely with the crew, who were welcomed back by Jeff Bezos and the Blue Origin team.
“I’ve heard about space for a long time. I’m taking the opportunity to see for myself. What a miracle,” said William Shatner before the mission.
Suborbital flight can be followed live:
This is New Shepard’s 18th mission and Blue Origin’s second manned flight, which sent Jeff Bezos and three others into space on July 20th.
The flight was initially scheduled for last Tuesday (12), but was postponed due to strong winds.
In addition to the science fiction star, the other passengers on the trip are Audrey Powers, Blue Origin’s vice president of mission and operations; Chris Boshuizen, co-founder of satellite company Planet Labs; and Glen de Vries, co-founder of the software company Medidata.
