Google Stadia It began as the company’s big foray into the video game industry. However, last year it was revealed that the division in charge of creating exclusive experiences had closed its doors, thus focusing the company’s resources on the streaming service. Now, a new report has revealed that Stadia is no longer a priority for Google, and now they will focus on selling this technology to different companies.
According to Business Insider, Stadia has been renamed Google Stream. Alongside this, it has been mentioned that before the acquisition of Sony, Google was in talks with Bungie to offer this platform to Destiny creators, who “would own the content and control the user experience” and have shown interest in creating their own platform of this type. It is currently unknown how the Sony purchase affected these negotiations.
They have also mentioned conversations with Capcom for Google Stream to run demos similar to what happened with the AT&T deal for Batman: Arkham Knight. Outside of traditional gaming companies, Google is also talking to Peleton about having Stadia titles on fitness bikes.
On the other hand, the report has pointed out that by the end of 2020, Google missed its goal of one million monthly active users by “about 25%”, and one person was quoted as saying that “retention was a real problem.” In a statement, Google did nothing to really refute the article, noting that it is “still focused on bringing great games to Stadia in 2022”, specifically over 100 titles are again in focus.
On related issues, the state of Washington DC has filed a lawsuit against Google.
Editor’s Note:
While it appears that Google Stadia will still be alive to some degree, the company’s intentions are no longer as high as they were in the past. The focus on getting business with specific companies speaks to the fact that Google doesn’t have much intention of staying in the video game industry, but doesn’t want to abandon its cloud technology.
