According to a recent interview, the creator of the series Squid Game reveals an alternate ending, underlining how the conclusion was decided after many second thoughts, which could change history. The final decision was made after many thoughts regarding the nature of the protagonist, including the possibility of a second season.

In recording the last episode, the director himself was undecided on how to end the story, including the possibility of Gi-hun taking the plane, returning home to his family and leaving the games behind. His statements are as follows:
We actually struggled between two different scenarios for the finale. There was one, the other alternate ending, in which Gi-hun got on the plane and left. And then of course there was the one where he would go back and walk towards the camera. We constantly asked ourselves: is it really right for Gi-hun to make the decision to leave and visit his family, to pursue his own happiness? Is this the right way for us to really come up with the question or message we wanted to convey through the show? We came to the conclusion that the question we wanted to ask cannot be asked if he left by plane. The question we want to answer – why did the world get to what it is now? – can have an answer or can only be proposed if Gi-hun goes back and walks towards the camera. So that’s how we ended up with that ending in the finale.
In light of the recent confirmation of a second season, we understand even more the motivation behind the desire not to choose this alternative ending, which would have concluded completely Squid Game without the possibility of being able to continue the story.
