The industry’s quintessential RPG company, Square Enixhas been betting on big productions to generate new audiences and also million-dollar profits that can result in new projects worth creating. However, the money invested is so much that they have to distribute many copies of their games to do so, and even though their latest releases are very good, it seems that they cannot be considered a success.
The company has acknowledged that profits from Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Final Fantasy XVI did not meet expectations. During a financial results briefing in May, the company’s president, Takashi Kiryuexpressed disappointment with the performance of both titles. Despite both games being considered key in its catalogue, sales did not meet the established objectives, which raises concerns about the current strategy.
Kiryu noted that “earnings did not meet our expectations” in the HD gaming subsegment, where Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Final Fantasy 16 failed to attract the anticipated level of sales. He also mentioned that initial sales of Foamstars and Rebirthboth launched in the fourth quarter of the last financial year, were also not strong enough. This has increased the pressure on the company which has adopted a multi-platform strategy to try to compensate for the poor financial performance.
Despite Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth While the fourth best-selling game in the United States, it fell far behind its predecessor, further adding to the perception of underperformance. While this is Square Enix’s first official acknowledgement of the situation, it did not specify to what degree these titles failed to meet their goals, reinforcing the idea that expectations were particularly high for both games.
Looking ahead, the launch of Dragon Quest 3 HD 2D November could be key to improving Square Enix’s financial situation. With the company facing increasing challenges, this title could offer a significant respite and help close the year with a better outlook. However, the situation reflects an urgent need for reflection on the high expectations that Square Enix sets for its most important titles.

Author’s note: With this kind of news I fear for the fate of Kingdom Hearts 4, and for now they have not given any new news. Besides, it would be the next big game for the company, given that there is nothing big planned.
