“Scientific literature shows that many factors help prevent the degeneration of the nervous system, and therefore promote the preservation of long-term functioning. Among these there are certainly genetic factors, but controllable environmental factors also play a role. Among these, certainly stress, understood in a medical and not psychological sense, and therefore everything that can damage neurons, diabetes, obesity, poor nutrition, environmental encounters with toxic substances, pesticides or pollutants”. This was stated by Alberto Albanese, professor of Neurology at the Humanitas Rozzano Clinical Institute and president of the International Association on Parkinsonian Syndromes and Related Diseases, on the occasion of the opening of the 5th International Congress “Healthy lifespan – positive nutrition, antiinflammation diet, physical activity and sport” organized today and tomorrow by the Paolo Sorbini Foundation, and promoted by Enervit and Technogym, at Palazzo Mezzanotte in Milan.
The two-day event, which sees internationally renowned experts discuss the main aspects linked to improving the quality of life and promoting healthy longevity, is aimed mainly at biologists, dieticians, pharmacists, physiotherapists, surgeons, students and graduates in sports sciences and medical specialists. A dynamic lifestyle is also important to prevent the degeneration of the nervous system, as the neurologist Albanese explains: “Performing physical activity at medium or high intensity regularly is important because in the last few years it has been discovered that the nerve cells, the neurons in particular use lactic acid for their continuous activity. When physical activity is carried out continuously, lactic acid is produced in the muscles and this, in addition to that produced within the nervous system, facilitates the functioning of the muscles. neuronal activities. Neurons remain more dynamic and more efficient for as long as they are stimulated by the presence of lactic acid, which is a real protector of neurological function. The type of physical activity you carry out is therefore very important.”
Precisely because of its role in protecting the correct functions of the nervous system, according to the expert “sport must be incorporated into the education of young people. It is important that it is considered a way of life, a lifestyle”.
