Spider-Man He is one of the most iconic characters in the history of comics, and transcends beyond the comic book medium; he has movies, toys, television series, references everywhere that make him very important to many people.
On this very special occasion we are going to visit those stories that define Spider-Man as that character that, to this day, we want to continue seeing in Marvel comics and, of course, in the MCU.
You’ll find all these stories in comics, so head over to your favorite store to look for them, either in their respective stapled, TPB, omnibus format or, if things are really complicated, digital.

Stories that define Spider-Man
Ultimate Spider-Man
Before the arrival of Miles Morales, Peter Parker was the protagonist of the Ultimate Spider-Man comic which was written by Brian Michael Bendis. From 2000 to 2009, without stopping, we see how Spider-Man gets much more modern stories and attached to this new universe that Marvel created in the comics.
In these stories we have the classic villains like Kingpin, Sandman, Green Goblin and more. Thanks to the fact that the classic essence of the character was maintained and his presentation was greatly modernized. Technically, it made readers return to this world. A key point of this story is that after 6 volumes we already know that Norman Osborne is Spider-Man and what follows after is something that has no way to be described. It is a must read.
Kraven’s Last Hunt
One of the best stories Spider-Man has is, without a doubt, Kraven’s Last Hunt. Not only because it puts two antagonistic characters on a complex terrain. This fight is not only defined by strength, but by the intelligence of both, because on one side we have the ultimate hunter who has no brakes and, on the other, a hero who makes every effort to always come out ahead.
One of the reasons this story is so important is that Spidey himself goes out of his way to give Mary Jane Watson something very special, since they’ve only been together for a short time. It’s amazing how Kraven puts on the black Spider-Man suit, showing what a great hunter he is.
The Goblin’s: The Last Stand
Just when we think Spider-Man has his whole life under control, a villain finds out something and the whole world is turned upside down, so much so that there is no turning back when catastrophe strikes. In the 1970s, Norman Osborne loses his memory and forgets who Spider-Man is, but then regains it and to do the final damage, decides that something must be done to his girlfriend, Gwen Stacy.
The issue here is that Spider-Man, when trying to rescue Gwen Stacy, ends up killing her because when he catches her with his web, he breaks her back and with it her spine. This causes Peter Parker’s way of thinking to change and the way he will rescue other beings from now on.
Spider-Man: Blue
This comic came out in 2003 and is by the legendary Jeph Loeb. This story belongs to another color compendium where we have Daredevil Yellow, Hulk Gray and Captain America White. The joke is that these stories focus on how the characters lose someone important in their lives.
In this comic, Spidey is very reminiscent of Gwen Stacy, who is his first love. Peter narrates the loss and pain of not having her anymore. It is a love letter to the character created by Steve Ditko and Stan Lee. It is a must-read that you can read at any time.
Spider-Man Back in Black
One of the comics where we truly see that Spider-Man is more human than hero is when the Kingpin orders the killing of Aunt May. This causes our hero to be heartbroken and to go on a crusade to try to finish off the one who did irreparable damage to one of his most loved ones.
Technically, Peter forgets to use the suit, he throws himself at everything and against whatever is in front of him to get revenge. Likewise, Spider-Man returns to wearing the black suit, the one with which he expressed all his power and aggression without ties. From here comes one of the most complicated decisions for our hero, making a pact with Mephisto that will have a very important impact on his life.
