The roguelike Spelunky is considered a classic of the indie sceneas well as a very influential game despite not being a big production. We would have imagined everything, however, except that someone would come to convert it for Commodore 64. Happy to have been surprised positively, fortunately.
The author of this feat is the independent developer PaulKo64, aka Paul Koller, who has created an excellent conversion, perfectly playable, on sale for only $2.99.
A great conversion
As you can see from the launch video, the game has basically most of the features of the major version, from which it takes all the main mechanics. The procedural creation of the maps has also been maintained. So we have the possibility of throwing dynamite sticks, there are the very insidious traps, the missing to save and so on.
Of course, graphically it is much more bare, but technically it is still a very valid title (relative to the Commodore 64 scene), also considering that Koller has included the entire game in a single 64Kb loading. In short, it is possible to play it via emulators or on real hardware, to the delight of those who still do not want to retire the biscottone (the nickname given in Italy to the most popular model of the Commodore computer).
If you are interested, you can buy it for less than the price of a cappuccino with croissant at the station bar on itch.io.
Of course, the original Spelunky is also available on a myriad of modern platforms, including PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and more. An official sequel was also released in more recent years, but it didn’t have the same resonance as the original.
