Spelling mistakes in Spanish will be penalized twice as much as in Catalan in the 2025 Selectivity. The Organizing Commission of the University Entrance Tests (PAU) in the Balearic Islands has agreed that in non-linguistic subjects a maximum of 1 point at a rate of 0.1 points for misspelling from the third mistake. However, spelling mistakes in the Spanish Language subject will be punished twice as much as in the Catalan subject: 0.25 in Spanish and 0.125 in Catalan.
Education sources have explained to ABC that the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) requested this “differentiation” because it has confirmed in previous editions that – despite the linguistic immersion that prevails in the classrooms – students committed more mistakes in Catalan than in Spanish. These same sources emphasize that this measure is temporary and will only be applied in 2025; Starting in 2026, spelling errors will be punished equally in both co-official languages.
Thus, in the subject of Catalan Language and Literature II a maximum of 2 points may be deducted and each spelling error in Catalan will be penalized with 0.125, half that in Spanish Language and Literature, which will deduct 0.25 points. The first spelling mistake will be ‘forgiven’, therefore it will not be deducted from the grade. In Foreign Language tests, a maximum of 1.5 points may be subtracted according to a text production rubric.
The University Access Test (PAU) will take place from June 3 to 5, 2025 and the extraordinary call on July 1, 2 and 3. Between October 15 and this Thursday, information meetings were held for Baccalaureate teachers of each of the 34 subjects that will make up the PAU.
The 2025 PAU will be the first edition to be carried out after the publication of Royal Decree 534/2024, of June 11, which regulates the requirements for access to official university degree courses, the basic characteristics of the access and the basic regulations of admission procedures. This Royal Decree incorporates a series of new features that significantly modify the PAU compared to previous editions.
Choice
Thus, in each subject a single exam model will be delivered. However, if it is deemed appropriate, in some sections the possibility of choosing between several questions may be included. This choice may not imply in any case a reduction in the number of specific competencies subject to evaluation.
On the other hand, the tests will have a competency design that will allow checking the degree of achievement of the specific competencies of the subjects. The Organizing Commission of the PAU in the Balearic Islands has approved that, in those subjects that traditionally did not have a competency design, based on the agreement reached by the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE), between 20 and 25% of the score corresponds to questions of a competency nature, with the aim of this percentage increasing progressively.
