During the “Enough Violence” symposium in Sharjah yesterday, specialists warned of the increase in domestic violence towards children, due to its psychological damage that affects children’s health, stressing the need to develop children’s behavioral awareness instead of punishment.
In detail, the psychological consultant at the Department of Social Services in Sharjah, Dr. Aida Hashem, said during the symposium “Enough violence… Preparing children to confront and overcome the psychological effects,” which was organized by the Department of Social Services in Sharjah, yesterday: “Psychological illness has basic conditions and standards. A child who grows up In a family where there is excessive pampering or excessive violence, one is more vulnerable to developing psychological illness, and therefore moderation in upbringing is the best thing until children become normal.”
She added that all problems affect and affect the child’s psyche, but this matter can be broken through awareness by visiting the psychological clinic and clarifying the truth about the fear of visiting it that a large number of parents suffer from.
She spoke about what is called “the cycle of violence or hereditary violence,” explaining that some parents who were subjected to violent upbringing by their parents repeat the same thing with their children on the grounds that this pattern helps to improve the child’s condition, but this is not true, because it is considered a type of sadism. Hence, it is necessary to enhance the discussion with the child, and explain matters that are incomprehensible to him.
She pointed out that there is a state of loss of understanding between father and son, because there is no listening on the part of the parents, so specialists have created a treatment called “emotional therapy” that targets feelings.
In turn, the Director of the Care and Rehabilitation Department at the Dubai Foundation for Women and Children, Dr. Ghanima Al-Bahri, said: “National data lists the abuse directed at children on a daily basis, but the classifications and degrees of severity are not the same, and therefore we must now unify the terminology between the authorities, as it is an urgent necessity, and there is a project “It is being prepared federally for this matter.” She added: “Studies say that the UAE is two or three degrees below the global average in terms of child abuse, which is a positive thing that shows that there is development,” noting that some studies indicate that emotional and psychological violence and bullying topped the indicators of child abuse.
She stressed the importance of treating children’s behaviors through social interventions and not violence, as violence generates violence and makes the child behave badly to the point of insulting his parents, which is unacceptable. Dr. Ghanima Al-Bahri stressed that beatings affect the child psychologically, and the psychological impact continues with him, and therefore parents must bear responsibility towards their children. She pointed out the importance of developing behavioral awareness among children as an alternative to punishment, stressing that the essential point for benefiting from practical practices in the psychological field is practice, which in turn contributes to changing behavior, and that children are not exposed to bullying at school, whether by the teacher or fellow students, in addition to the main role of institutions. Religious socialization.
The psychological and social expert at the Kanaf Center, Dr. Banna Bouzboun, said: “We must train our children to protect themselves and that they have the right to refuse. The child has the right to say ‘no’ on the condition that he understands and discusses, so that he expresses his opinion while adhering to customs and traditions.”
In turn, the official in charge of the Child Protection Line at the Department of Social Services, Khaled Al Kathiri, revealed that there is a decline in psychological reports received by the Child Protection Line compared to previous years, and this is an indication of increased awareness among families. He said: “Today there is a large gap between parents and children. The electronic device has become the child’s first friend, and therefore awareness programs must be increased, getting closer to the child, and treating him properly.”
Al-Kathiri added: “We receive many reports related to artificial intelligence and technology, so as a father or mother I must develop myself and learn everything that is going on around us in terms of technological development so that I can control my children,” stressing the importance of parents not comparing their children to each other so as not to create Psychological problem in children.
