More than four months have passed since President Pedro Castillo assumed power in Peru and political instability has been a constant during his tenure. The president has forced some ministers to resign due to various questions and these decisions have scared off investors. Economically, in the Castillo era the Andean nation experienced the highest inflation in the last 12 years, reducing every day the purchasing power of the population.
The opposition continues in an incessant attack, with the blockade in Parliament of government initiatives, interpellation sessions with ministers and the threat of dismissal of Castillo through the presidential vacancy process.
On the other hand, the scandal of the former secretary of the presidency, Bruno Pacheco, from whom the Prosecutor’s Office confiscated $ 20,000 hidden in a bathroom of the Government Palace, while he was being investigated for, supposedly, manipulating the promotions of some soldiers, has plummeted acceptance of the Peruvian president. 59% of citizens disapprove of it, according to an opinion poll by pollster Datum.
Pedro Castillo defeated his opponents and escaped an impeachment process. But he would make a serious mistake if he does not bring about changes in his Government and in the high officials that surround him. The president has the opportunity to rectify his mistakes and build bridges with Congress and with economic groups. Only in this way will your Administration achieve governability and bring tranquility to the country.
It should also focus on getting Peru out of the economic and social stagnation that it is experiencing and that has been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic, which has claimed the lives of more than 200,000 Peruvians. If he does not take the reins of the country quickly, Castillo runs the risk that Parliament will remove him from power, as happened with former President Martín Vizcarra.
