S.onos, the specialist for wirelessly networked loudspeakers, now also wants to pack lightly, for example in a backpack or in a picnic basket. The brand’s outdoor model has been around for a long time. It goes by the name of Move, but it’s not really mobile. Its live weight of 3 kilograms on the handle is more suitable for radius of movement within the boundaries of the domestic property. The new one, called Roam, should go further into life. It weighs in at just 430 grams and measures almost 17 centimeters in length, so it can compete with many Bluetooth speakers that are used for fresh air use in these disciplines.
The small Sonos costs 179 euros, significantly more than many other Bluetooth models, but it can also do a lot more. Its name suggests it. For the roam, Bluetooth is only one of the possible radio transmission paths. If it comes close to the home WiFi, it automatically connects to this wireless network and, if other Sonos models also play a role in the household, becomes part of a multi-room network. The elegant network change also works the other way around as soon as the loudspeaker leaves the house.
The Roam has the shape of a triangular column with rounded edges, a cover with countless fine holes lets the sound out. The loudspeaker can make music while standing or lying down. Rubberized feet and a non-slip floor provide support. Sonos also uses the same material to manufacture the control surface at the head end. Below are the usual elements: pushbuttons for volume, to start or interrupt the music program and to mute the built-in microphone that receives spoken text for the control systems from Amazon and Google. The soft interfaces protect against dust and splash water. The device should even survive a fall into the pool. However, we spared him this test.
Inside the little musician sits a two-way system. A dome reproduces the highs, an oval membrane contributes mids and low tones. The device draws the necessary energy from a rechargeable battery that should last up to 10 hours. Unlike in the larger move, the energy storage device cannot be changed at the end of its life. Then service is required. A supplied USB-C cable is used to charge the battery. The manufacturer assumes that a suitable power supply unit is already in the house. The energy transfer also works wirelessly with a base based on the Qi induction standard. It strikes with a further 49 euros.
Setup is quick and easy if the appropriate app is already installed for other Sonos speakers. Then you just add the little ones. In multi-room operation, the Roam can be combined with a second unit to form a stereo set. And thanks to the swap function, it can transfer music to another speaker in the system at the push of a button. Trueplay with the built-in microphone ensures automatic sound optimization. So conditioned, the little one cuts a fine figure. Of course, he doesn’t manage to play low-pitched muscles, but he intones the rest of the musical spectrum cleanly, even at higher volumes.
