The Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, revealed this Wednesday during her appearance at her own request before the Congressional Defense Commission that the Spanish military contingent deployed in Somalia suffered a “major” attack a few days ago.
Robles, who appeared before the Defense commission to report on the development of the Armed Forces’ operations abroad as well as the current situation and activity of the troops deployed in Lebanon as part of the UN UNIFIL Mission, revealed that He held a conversation with the Spanish colonel in command of this contingent of 20 soldiers and confirmed that “none of our soldiers have been injured.”
The minister also wanted to highlight the example of height, morale and commitment to the EUTM-Somalia mission of the European Union, launched in 2010, with a headquarters established in Mogadishu and which seeks to contribute to the training of the Somali Armed Forces.
Robles reiterates Spain’s commitment to “redirect the situation” in Lebanon
The Minister of Defense has insisted on Spain’s commitment to redirect the situation in Lebanon after the escalation in armed clashes between Israel and the Shiite group Hezbollah, and has warned: “We cannot allow Lebanon to be a new Afghanistan.”
“We cannot reproduce what has happened in Afghanistan,” the minister insisted before the deputies present in the Defense Commission, reminding them of the failure of the international community in that country, in which “Spain paid a high price.” in human lives and where unfortunately, women, when they are not silenced, are murdered.
Robles has insisted on denouncing the situation of women in Afghanistan after the withdrawal of international troops, “absolutely persecuted, forced to marry at the age of 12, if not before,” with the complicit silence of the international community. “Enough of hypocrisy,” he demanded.
The minister has pointed out that although the blue helmets are not a target of Israel or Hezbollah, they are deployed in an area where armed clashes are taking place, so the risk of “collateral damage is permanent.”
To date, the fighting has caused nine injuries of varying degrees among Unifil troops, none of them Spanish nationals.
