The accident happened in the Catalonia region.

Three a worker trapped in a mine has died in Spain.

Workers were trapped deep underground on Thursday morning in a potash mine in Catalonia.

Later on Thursday, the Catalan administration announced that the workers had died.

AFP says that the accident happened at a depth of about 900 meters.

In the mine potassium carbonate, i.e. potash, is mined. The accident site is located approximately 75 kilometers from Barcelona.

The police had sent experts to the scene to assess the progress of the rescue operation.

The mine is owned by a company called ICL Iberia, which is the Spanish subsidiary of an Israeli chemical company.
