Penultimate act of the season for the WRC World Championship which makes a stop on Iberian soil for the Rally Racc di Spagna on a completely asphalted surface – as has not happened since 2009 – very demanding on a technical level. A race program that develops between Thursday 14 and Sunday 17 October, with 17 special stages for a total of 280.46 km timed. Sébastien Ogier on Toyota Yaris defends the first place in the drivers’ standings with 24 points ahead of team mate Gazoo Racing Elfyn Evans: the Spanish race could be decisive for the award of the championship between one of the two standard bearers of the Japanese company (to the Frenchman Ogier 6 points are enough for mathematics certainty of the eighth title). The last edition held, in 2019, saw the success of Thierry Neuville on Hyundai.

The service park of the Rally of Spain 2021 is located in Salou, a tourist resort on the Mediterranean coast, just over 100 km south of Barcelona. The event, whose first edition dates back to 1975 – included in the European Rally calendar -, has been part of the world championship program since 1991, first with a beating heart on the Costa Brava in Lloret de Mar, then again in Salou since 2002, when it was adopted. the choice of creating a mix between asphalt and dirt. The 2021 edition of the Rally of Spain opens on Thursday 14 October with the Shakedown from the morning (from 9.01), followed by the inauguration ceremony; Friday 15 October for the registered crews a westward route, with 6 special stages (112.02 km; starting at 8.43 am); the second stage on Saturday 16 October further 7 stages (117.54 km) including the longer section “El Montmell” (24.4 km) to be repeated in the morning and in the afternoon (start at 8.44 am). Grand final Sunday 16 October last 4 stages (50.90 km): the first “Santa Marina” 1 with start from 7 am, the last “Riudecanyes” 2 – Power Stage (16,35 km) from 12.18. From a technical point of view, the Rally di Spagna is characterized by asphalted surfaces and roads sometimes with concrete surfaces which tend to become slippery during the passages due to dirt and dirt brought along by the drivers; for all essential lines “aggressive” and at the same time calibrated. The new Pirelli P Zero tires developed with asphalt compound are available to the teams.

He aims for the Ogier title: “I’m happy to have three days to ride on this really fun asphalt. We are in a privileged position for the championship and the Rally of Spain is the first really useful opportunity to get a new title, so I will do everything to make it happen ”. While Evans has the imperative to keep the challenge open until the last act in Monza (18-12 November 2021), as happened in 2020: “At this point of the season the weather can be an important variable and it is never taken for granted that run on dry asphalt in Spain: if it does not rain, as we have already seen in recent years, it will be a very complicated and demanding event ”. Optimism at Hyundai: “A rally that I like, the smooth roads are a lot of fun with these Wrc cars – in Neuville’s words -. The driving style is similar to what you can have on the circuit, so you have to be precise and clean behind the wheel ”.

The reigning champion Ogier (Toyota Yaris Gazoo Racing) arrives at the Rally of Spain, penultimate act of the WRC 2021 World Championship, with 190 points; second teammate Evans (166), third Thierry Neuville (Hyundai i20 Coupé) with 130 points. Fourth Kalle Rovanperä (Toyota) with 129 points, fifth Ott Tänak (Hyundai) with 128. First Toyota Gazoo Racing Wrt (439 points), second Hyundai Shell Mobis (378), third M-Sport Ford (171).
