Defeat Canada and go as first in the group, avoiding the United States, Australia and Serbia in the quarterfinals
The national team was worth up to losing nine to Canada, but the word nap does not exist in their dictionary. Spain does not understand breaks, which went to the game as if it were the final of the World Cup. Like it always does, actually. Direct to the jugular of the Americans, who in a few minutes were already ten down on the scoreboard without having barely landed in the match (13-23).
It was a defensive exhibition of Spain, who played with five on the court, but that seemed ten. The arms of the Spanish were everywhere, collapsing the area and forcing Canada to a titanic effort to score.
The selection was a symphony in tune. Nothing to do with the Eurobasket version, where there were too many pieces missing and where the young women were still timid. In Tokyo, Alba Torrens and Astou Ndour (20 points and 9 rebounds today) are delivering in a big way. Especially the pivot, the most regular in these three group matches in which the team has presented its candidacy for the podium. Even more so with the victory against Canada, which paves the way to the medals, as the United States, Australia and Serbia are avoided in the quarterfinals.

Match of the third and last day of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic women’s basketball tournament, played at the Saitama Super Arena.
After that first magnificent quarter, Spain continued to show off a great defense, but the American team also raised the level. The triples began to enter and the distance was shortened a bit (34-40, min. 20). Spain left after the break ready to finish the match and did so with a 16-2 in five minutes of play. Partial that ended Canadian hopes and allowed Mondelo to think about the future (36-56, min. 25).
From then on, the technician distributed the efforts, taking a look at the horizon. To the quarterfinal duel where the medals are already beginning to be glimpsed. Olympic podium that would act as a balm for the disappointment of the Eurobasket and the blur of not being able to be in the World Cup next year. A respite that did not suit the team, as it allowed his rival to re-engage in a duel that he had lost and in which he again had options (56-62, min. 34).
Spain brought out the genius again, with Torrens (8 of his 12 points came in the fourth quarter) assuming the lead and with defense again as the flag. Two triples from the Yekaterinburg forward cleared up the doubts and sentenced the match already thinking in the quarterfinals. This time yes. A duel to which all the players will arrive plugged in after a dreamy first phase in which they had time to take their revenge against Serbia.
