In the age group of 20 to 29 years, 640 positives are already registered for every 100,000 cases
Spain is experiencing the most vertiginous escalation of the virus since the beginning of the pandemic. In just one week, the cumulative incidence (AI)
it has gone from 100.06 cases per 100,000 inhabitants every 14 days registered last Monday to 204.16 positives registered today. Since Friday, the AI has climbed 51 points.
The country did not see such high incidence figures since the beginning of May when Spain had just touched the ceiling of the fourth wave just a few days before. The growth of cases, especially among the younger population and, therefore, less immunized, has also skyrocketed in recent days, going from the 10,179 newly infected reported
during the penultimate weekend at 32,607 infected from these last holidays. In a week the infected have tripled, something that was not seen in the tables since the start of the coronavirus health crisis in March and April 2020.
What many consider to be the fifth wave of the coronavirus is significantly affecting the
group between 20 and 29 years old. According to data published this Monday by the Ministry of Health, AI in this age cohort is already in 640 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
The figures among the youngest are totally skyrocketing. In three communities, the incidence in the group aged 20 to 29 years exceeds a thousand cases, light years away from the 250 cases that mark the entry into extreme risk. Thus, in Catalonia the AI of this cohort stands at 1,589 per 100,000 inhabitants, in Cantabria at 1,419 and in Castilla y León at 1,069.
The situation also begins to be very worrying among adolescents. In the age group between 12 and 19 years, totally unprotected from vaccines, the cumulative incidence has gone from 406 positives on Friday to 584 cases this Monday. In this cohort, mainly of minors, there are also two communities (Navarra with 1,530 and Catalonia with 1,185) that exceed a thousand cases of incidence.
In any case, in each and every one of the age groups the incidence has increased during the last weekend, although the figures are not comparable.
In the 70 to 79 age group, AI is placed in 25 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, in those over 80 in 41 and in those in their sixties, In many cases still pending the second AstraZeneca doses, the AI grows to 62 positives.
The statistics of this Monday included an important novelty with respect to the tables of previous days in which the very strong increase in infections did not translate into greater pressure on the health system. This seems to start to change. And it is that the Health tables revealed that hospital pressure begins to rebound after more than two months of continuous drops. Thus, the number of patients admitted for covid has grown to 2,723, more than 300 more people than those hospitalized last Friday.
The occupancy of beds has increased during the weekend from 1.99 to 2.26% while that of the ICUs has gone from 6.39 to 6.73%. They are, in any case, figures very far from the moments of saturation caused by other waves.
The Health indicators this Monday also made it very clear that the upward trend will continue strongly in the coming weeks. Positivity, the percentage of positive tests with respect to the total number of tests, one of the parameters that best anticipates a trend, has also experienced an unknown increase in recent months, going from 5.87% on Friday to 8.38% on Monday .
The other great index that predicts the evolution, the accumulated incidence at 7 days, marked 143.11 cases this Monday, well above half of the 14 days (204.16), which predicts that the expansion of the virus will not it has not touched, far from it, its ceiling in the short term.
