Mith an evasive maneuver, the International Space Station ISS avoided a collision with space debris. The Russian space agency Roskosmos announced via Telegram that the engines of the docked transporter Progress MS-18 were switched on for about ten minutes on Saturday. The flight altitude of the ISS was raised by 1.8 kilometers as a result of the impulse.
As a result of the correction, the outpost of mankind received an altitude of almost 414 kilometers above the earth, according to Roskosmos. The maximum altitude is almost 438 kilometers. The German astronaut Matthias Maurer is currently working on the ISS.
Space debris is considered an increasing problem in space. Again and again the ISS has to avoid debris. A collision could severely damage the station. In November, the crew had to get to safety in two docked spaceships – Russia’s military had shot down a disused satellite, and the debris threatened to collide with the ISS. The incident went smoothly.
