Candidates Guilherme Boulos (PSOL), Ricardo Nunes (MDB) and Pablo Marçal (PRTB), who, according to the polls, are competing for two places in a second round of the election for the Mayor of São Paulo, rehearsed on the night of Thursday, 3 , a more purposeful behavior in the debate promoted by TV Globo – the last before voting in the first round, on Sunday, 6. However, during the meeting, the candidates once again resorted to provocations and mutual attacks.
Datafolha research on the election released on Thursday shows that the three candidates remain in a three-way tie for leadership.
After the first blocks in which participants adopted a mild tone in their questions and answers, Nunes, current mayor and candidate for re-election, in a direct clash with Marçal, decided to rescue his opponent’s past to show what he considers to be the PRTB candidate’s limitations. The mayor cited a story about a PRTB candidate’s promise to build houses in Africa. “Promised more than 300, did less than 30”, said Nunes. Shortly before, the influencer’s speech was one of renewal. He listed city politicians to tell voters that it is time to change all this and remove from power the group that, according to him, has been in charge of the administration for 12 years.
The PSB candidate, Tabata Amaral, pointed out changes in Boulos’ speeches over the years and stated that the PSOL candidate was shaped by political marketing to contest the elections. One of the challenges of the PSOL candidate’s campaign this year is precisely to move away from the radical image and present a calm version of the candidate. With this approach, Tabata makes it clear that he should not give in to pressure to eventually support Boulos and climb onto his platform in a likely second round.
For the debate, five candidates were invited: in addition to Nunes, Boulos, Marçal and Tabata, also the presenter José Luiz Datena (PSDB). The invitations comply with the electoral norm which stipulates that, for debates broadcast by radio and television stations, candidates with a minimum representation of five parliamentarians in the National Congress must be included.
The broadcaster also added the journalistic criterion of public interest to the invitations, extending it to competitors who have reached at least 6% voting intention in the latest Quaest survey, released on the 30th – which made the PRTB candidate , which does not have parliamentarians in the legislative houses, was also invited.
‘Sheepskin’
Boulos questioned Marçal about the choice of secretariat. Before, he made a provocation about the profile adopted by the PRTB candidate during the debate. “I find the profile that Marçal adopted today very strange,” said the PSOL candidate. “He wants to act good. Wolf in sheep’s clothing.” “Why did you appoint (João) Doria’s team to govern together with you?” asked Boulos.
“Is he by any chance Doria’s son, did Doria give birth to him? The people I accepted into my government were, precisely, the ones who broke with Doria”, countered Pablo Marçal.
Boulos, in his reply, asked Marçal why the influencer “hates women so much”. “It’s a ‘crazy leftist’ talk, just like you”, said Pablo Marçal in his rejoinder.
Tabata once again questioned whether voters “agree” with Nunes’ statements about his management at São Paulo City Hall
In the penultimate clash of the third block, the current mayor directed his question to the federal deputy. Nunes mentioned the expansion of parks and reduction of flooding rates in the city of São Paulo. Tabata, again, threw the question to the voters. “Do you agree?”, the candidate asked the public about the emedebista’s speeches. “Do you really think we are making progress?”, he adds, and mentions plans to reduce risks regarding climate change and outlined concern about the rainy season in the capital of São Paulo due to flooding.
Nunes mentions that he increased the area of vegetation cover in the city during his administration, and that he is “proud” of the actions carried out during his mandate regarding the environment.
“These are such obvious things to understand that it is no longer a privilege, it is no longer a choice. It has to be done now”, concluded the deputy on measures to slow down the impact of climate change in São Paulo.
