South Korea unveils new Hyunmoo-5 ballistic missile at parade
South Korea unveiled its newest ballistic missile, the Hyunmoo-5, during a parade to mark the Republic’s Armed Forces Day. About this reports Army Recognition.
“Described by Seoul as a retaliation weapon aimed at countering threats from North Korea, the Hyunmoo-5 missile (dubbed the ‘monster missile’ for its capabilities) is capable of carrying one of the world’s largest conventional warheads, weighing up to nine tons,” writes the publication.
It is noted that the missile’s warhead is capable of penetrating fortified bunkers and deep tunnels, causing a destructive effect comparable to the use of nuclear weapons.
Hyunmoo-5, weighing 36 tons, flies on an “elevated trajectory”, passing through the exosphere before descending to its target at ten times the speed of sound. In the missile system on a wheeled chassis, a cold start system with compressed gas was implemented to remove the missile from the launch container before the engines started. This reduces possible damage to the launcher.

It is believed that the flight range of Hyunmoo-5 is more than 3,000 kilometers. The South Korean Strategic Command plans to receive more than 200 missiles.
Last February, South Korea’s Defense Development Agency announced a planned test launch of the Hyunmoo-5.
