Initially, the news sounded like this: “The North Korean submarine that got entangled in the nets of a South Korean fishing boat yesterday was on a training trip and ran into difficulties due to damage sustained.” At least, according to the North Korean news agency KCNA. That turned out to be fake news behind a smoke screen. The ‘training run’ was in reality a spy mission that failed, but with a fatal outcome. The Dutch journalist Jeroen Visser reconstructed the bizarre events partly on the basis of a diary of one of the North Korean crew members kept in the South Korean archives. Fragments of this had already been published by South Korean media, but never the entire text, because in Seoul it is qualified as communist propaganda material, according to Visser.
