Pretoria Toyota dealership owner Quentin Boylan modified a Hilux with a 6.2-liter V8 Mercedes Amg engine, over 500hp and 630Nm of torque. Here’s how it’s done
When the X-Class was launched in 2017, only three years later Mercedes was forced to retire from the market due to poor sales. Many fans of Stuttgart cars hoped that the large pickup would also be equipped with the V8 engine already present on other AMG models. But that did not happen and the vehicle born from the joint venture with Renault-Nissa did not bring the desired results. But now a 6.2 l V8 Amg engine has been fitted to another pickup. Not from Stuttgart, but from Japan: a Toyota Hilux. The latter modified by Quentin Boylan, owner of a Toyota dealership based in Pretoria, the capital of South Africa.
Toyota Hilux modified, engine and interior
–
Boylan himself, not satisfied with the X-Class, decided to mount the V8 and the front brakes, both Amg, on the Hilux. The suspensions are lowered. The interiors are equipped with seats finished in Alcantara leather, also similar in style to those produced by the German brand and with red details to enrich the interior. In addition to the Mercedes V8 with over 500 hp and 630 Nm of torque – with a glossy black cover with red tones and a conical filter – there is also an engine management system, the MoTeC M150, which currently costs over 2,560 euros, as well as an adapter between the engine and the original gearbox supplied with the pickup.
Toyota Hilux modified, rims and tires
–
The modified Hilux has 20 ”wheels similar to those of the Affalterbach company with 275/40 tires. It is not known how much the change cost. “The X-Class has always fitted an engine that has never convinced me – commented Boylan in an interview with the site Cars.co.za – With this V8 I have decided to modify the Toyota, which does not actually have a German transmission, but uses a six-speed automatic transmission from the Hilux, albeit specially modified to transmit the power from the Amg engine ”.
