“I am easily fattening type and I like to eat a lot. At the age of 25, I noticed that I am quite fat. Even putting on shoes caused colic. Since I didn’t want to eat less, I had to come up with something else.
Fortunately, I discovered that I like long runs. I run and walk 12 kilometers almost every morning. If I don’t move, I start to get tired and depressed.
95 percent of my work is sitting at the computer. I don’t like it at all. The best ideas come when I’m doing something physical. There should always be a pile of wood chips to chop. Sometimes I wonder if humans would be better off if a large part of what we do still revolves around staying warm and full.
Filming days are physical, because in my films we are outside and usually somewhere in a horse’s ass. I like places like that, even though they make projects harder. The demand is reflected in the end result. If it was relaxed while filming, I would suspect that something is wrong and that people are getting lazy.
How the actor looks is important to me as a director. I have to like a person’s appearance in order to do my job well. Jorma Tommila has acted in all my films. He is very close to what I think a man should be like.”
