The municipality of Sorocaba, in the interior of São Paulo, declared this Saturday (20) a state of calamity due to the damage caused by the heavy rains that hit the city during the early hours of the morning. The rain killed a woman, swept away cars, flooded streets and tore down walls. Sorocaba was the city in the state of São Paulo with the highest amount of precipitation recorded by Civil Defense, 148 millimeters in around 2 hours.
“The objective is to minimize the effects caused by rain. The decree [de calamidade] allows carrying out a series of emergency actions related to the rehabilitation of local scenarios. We have carried out a series of anti-flooding measures in the city, such as desilting works, construction of crossings over streams and flood reservoirs, which were essential to prevent the situation from becoming even more serious”, said Mayor Rodrigo Manga.

According to a survey by the Autonomous Water and Sewage Service of Sorocaba, since 1981 there has not been a volume of flooding in the city of the proportions like this Saturday, especially in the regions of Parque das Águas and Jardim Faculdade.
The rain that hit the city in the early hours of the morning caused a flood on Avenida Juvenal de Campos, which swept away a vehicle with two occupants. One of the people, a 74-year-old woman, was trapped inside the car and did not survive.
The Child Cancer Research and Assistance Group Hospital (Gpaci), in the same municipality, had part of the ground floor flooded. Patients had to be relocated to the upper floors of the hospital. In the city, there was also a record of the collapse of a wall at the Hospital Evangélico Sorocaba.
The São Paulo Military Police and the Fire Department reported that they are carrying out a joint effort this Saturday to restore the Gpaci hospital facilities. More than 40 agents are participating in the action. The team, made up of military police officers and firefighters, as well as volunteers from the Soldiers' School, is cleaning and unblocking hospital wards.
